People of Calabar

“My first encounter with the divine was special to me. I didn’t see heaven open up, didn’t see flying angels or see the hand of God. It happened when I got baptized with the Holy Spirit. I was young then, probably 11 or 12, at a Deeper Life Camp Meeting and the Officiating Pastor said we should begin to yearn deeply for the Holy Spirit and then led us in prayer. It was a few minutes into the prayer that it happened. I had this feeling that I was floating yet I knew I couldn’t be. There was this euphoria, unlike what I never knew, that was almost palpable and then I sensed in my heart I had obtained something. As I kept praying, what happened next was mind-blowing to me then: I could hear another voice praying with me and through me!”

There’s no mirror around me but I’m sure there was a look of amazement on my face. I understand why she keeps gesticulating with her hands. Sometimes, words are not enough to describe some events, so I press on for a mental picture

“Another memorable experience happened subsequently. I was asleep one night and suddenly I was in this dream/awake interface. There were 2 people running across a street, a pursuer and a victim, and I stood across as an observer. The pursuer was aggressive and caught up with the victim with the victim struggling to break free from the grip then there was this urge to pray for the victim. I then woke up and prayed fervently. I have no idea who the 2 people are and I have never seen them before. I’m not an impulsive person but there’re some forceful thoughts that come up to mind that I just have to act them out. That’s the Holy Spirit working in me and with me”
